Independent Professional: Are You Stuck or Struggling with Your Marketing?

You may have made great progress with marketing your professional services, but in some areas you may feel stuck or feel unsure what to do next or how to make a particular area of your marketing work.

You want to take your marketing and business to the next level as quickly as possible. You want to get the attention and interest of more of your ideal clients; you want better marketing materials that establish your value and get prospects to respond to you; you want to be able to consistently implement the marketing activities that will work best for you; and you want to meet with more qualified prospects and turn them into great clients who pay you well.

In other words, you want consistent marketing success.

But here’s the main issue:

It’s not so much what to do or even how to do it that’s the challenge. These days, with a quick Google search you can find endless information, articles, and blogs on marketing your professional services. You can search Amazon for some great how-to-marketing books. And you can search YouTube for many hands-on marketing techniques.

But here’s the challenge: How do you sort out the wheat from the chaff and employ the most effective marketing strategies for your business? There are so many options today that it can be confusing and overwhelming. (such as social media, the role of online marketing, etc.) And this can lead to avoidance and indecision.

So where do you need to focus your marketing efforts?

Here are 5 Key areas of marketing. Which of these areas is the biggest challenge to you?

Almost every part of marketing can be encompassed in these five areas below. If you are resisting or avoiding marketing, you probably have an issue with one or more of these:

Speaking about your business

Since marketing is 100% communication, a lot of marketing entails speaking to prospective clients. Do you feel uncomfortable with your marketing message? Perhaps you find it hard to clearly articulate your value and your uniqueness. You may feel that nobody really gets what you do. And because of this you mostly rely on word-of-mouth business from satisfied clients (who are better at talking about your services than you are).

Writing about your business

Or is writing a bigger challenge for you? Do you sit in front of your computer with an empty page and just go bank? Did it take you months to develop the material for your web page (or perhaps it’s still not complete)? For many people, writing feels intimidating, and brings up all kinds of feelings such as inadequacy, perfectionism and overwhelm. You may find that writing articles, blogs and email newsletters take so much time and effort that it’s just not worth it.

Contacting and following-up with clients

To turn a prospect into a client, contact has to be made one way or another. Are you just waiting for the phone to ring instead of getting out there and making connections? And if you do manage to do some networking or speaking, do you find it terrifying to reach out and follow-up with those you’ve met to discuss the possibilities of working together? For many, the fear of rejection, and feelings of inadequacy are both real and debilitating.

Asking for the business

When you finally do have a conversation with a potential client, you may hesitate to ask for the business. In fact, you may avoid asking for anything from a prospective client, such as asking someone if you can send some information about your services, or asking to speak on the phone, or asking for a meeting to have a selling conversation. Never mind asking for money! Asking is a big key to marketing success, and if you avoid it, you dramatically limit your opportunities.

Staying organized with things, projects and time

When many Independent Professionals market themselves, they tend to do it very randomly and inconsistently. There’s little organized planning, strategy or follow-through. We all know we need discipline and consistency for marketing, but perhaps you are avoiding marketing so much that you sabotage your efforts before you even start. I know professionals who spend huge amounts of time on low-priority issues that could be easily ignored or delegated instead of doing the marketing work only they can do.

Do you see yourself in any or many of these?

If so, what’s the solution? You want to be a better marketer, you know it’s important, but your resistance and avoidance are so strong that you don’t know how to get past them.

If you resonate with this, then you’re a good candidate for Marketing Action Coaching.

Marketing Action Coaching

The purpose of Marketing Action Coaching is to get you focused, unstuck and on track with your marketing.

Imagine what it would be like if you knew exactly what to do in your marketing and actually getting it done in an organized, consistent way, without procrastination, struggle and angst! (Yes, I know this might be hard to believe!)

And when you know how to get past your marketing resistance and avoidance, you’ll actually start to enjoy marketing and you’ll find it much easier to learn the basic principles and practices of attracting clients, not to mention putting these practices into action.

As a result you’ll find that speaking and writing about your business are no longer dreaded activities. You’ll discover that connecting and following-up with prospects no longer triggers fear of rejection, and that asking prospects to take action (including asking for the fees you deserve) is no longer a big deal.

In Marketing Action Coaching we work on two primary domains

First, we work together to teach you the most effective practices of attracting clients. Through coaching, online tutorials, exercises, practice and implementation we’ll support you in getting your marketing into shape and into action. You’ll know what to do and how to do it. We’ll break things down into doable chunks that you can handle until you have real momentum in your marketing. And we’ll support you in implementing what you’ve learned.

We’ll focus on these five key marketing areas

√ Marketing messages and speaking about your business

√ Writing persuasive marketing materials and content

√ Implementing various marketing activities to get the word out

√ Connecting with prospects, following-up and asking for action

√ Engaging in a non-manipulative, highly-effective selling process

Second, we work with you to overcome your resistance and avoidance of marketing. We show you how to get past your fears, doubts, aversions and reluctance about marketing. You’ll discover whole new ways to think about marketing activities you’ve avoided for years. We’ll show you how to be fully present to your resistance and how to get to the other side of it, so that you no longer have that resistance and you no longer avoid implementing your marketing.

How I work with you to get these marketing results:

I work with my clients in a marketing action coaching relationship that typically lasts for 3 to 12 months. In that time I’ll work with you in a very hands-on way, giving you the information, strategies, techniques, and coaching that will enable you to move forward successfully with your marketing.

You’ll have more clarity and direction, a step-by-step plan, and a higher marketing skill level that will enable you to move forward with confidence, plus resources that will enable you to continue to build your marketing abilities and effectiveness.

In our work together we’ll focus on a number of essential areas of marketing and we’ll go step-by-step. As we continue together, you’ll work on what you need to move your marketing forward. You’ll get how-to strategies and very rigorous levels of support and structure.

Here’s how the process is structured:

I work with clients step-by-step to both understand marketing and to build marketing skills. Here’s the process I take my clients through:

1. I work with you individually in Marketing Sessions.  Sessions are 75 to 90 minutes long. Sessions are typically two weeks and sometimes three weeks apart, depending on what you are working on. I can work with people in most countries. We’ll work by phone or Skype.

2. In each session we will address strategies, techniques, specific step-by-step how-tos, and assignments. Essentially, we’ll work to understand what you need, give you very specific directions on what you need to do and then provide the coaching and support to make sure it happens.

3. We’ll pay particular attention to areas of marketing that you avoid or experience resistance and stuckness. You’ll receive specific coaching, techniques and exercises that will enable you to get unstuck from anything you are resisting, including fear of rejection, perfectionism, and overwhelm. Whatever may be holding you back will be addressed.

4. Access to written and recorded marketing instructional materials and tutorials for the areas of marketing you’ll be working on.

5. In-between sessions we will review written materials and give feedback and direction. We’ll work with you as a partner to both learn and implement the practices that will move you closer to attracting more of your ideal clients.

6. You will have unlimited access to me by email and limited access by phone between sessions. If you have a question, need a resource or want some quick feedback, you don’t need to wait until your next individual session.

7. When we work together, you’ll have clear action plan to move forward. This plan will be co-created by you, the client, and me, the marketing coach. You will be in complete alignment with the plan and will know what to do and how to do it.

In addition, we can point you towards reliable resources for writing, editing and design if you need them. These are not included as part of my marketing coaching and consulting.

Summary of Marketing Action Coaching

We work with clients in 6-session blocks (by phone or by Skype), each over a 3- to 4-month period. What we accomplish in those sessions will depend greatly on your current situation, past marketing experience and ability to move into action. We typically get a lot done in a fairly short time. Clients contract for one 6-session Action Coaching block at a time. No long term contracts or monthly fees. You can work at your own pace.

Between sessions, you’ll be reading and listening to in-depth, how-to marketing tutorials, interviews and recording coaching calls, doing exercises, and implementing what you learn. You’ll always be working on what’s most relevant to your marketing right now. We build the foundation first with your marketing message and marketing materials and then move on to implementing marketing strategies and mastering the selling process. By the time we’re done you’ll not only have a complete marketing plan, you’ll have the skills and confidence to carry out this plan successfully, attracting more of your ideal clients.
